Language Capability | Australian Signals Directorate

As language roles within ASD are available across many disciplines, language specialists can expect to have a range of exceptional and diverse opportunities throughout the organisation during their career with ASD.

We are interested in a wide range of languages with current priorities being languages of Northeast and Southeast Asia, the Pacific, and the Middle East/Central Asian region. ASD provides great opportunities for further language training, and language specialists with proficiency in a non-priority language are encouraged and supported in using their language aptitude to undertake retraining for a priority language.

Below is a non-exhaustive list of examples of some of the different roles and tasks in which language specialists can apply their LOTE expertise and other skills – the role may include just one task on these lists, or may involve aspects of several. Signals Intelligence Analyst/Foreign Language Analyst

The Signals Intelligence Analyst/Foreign Language Analyst is responsible for performing translation, analysis and reporting of materials in languages other than English that are relevant to the Australian Signals Directorate and national security issues.

Staff are required to have knowledge of and compliance with relevant legislative frameworks, government decision-making and Australian Signals Directorate’s mission and policy requirements along with the necessary language qualifications or experience.

Required Skills

Ability to research, gather and analyse complex data sets
Ability to understand and utilise analytical tradecraft tools
Strong interpersonal skills for building and maintaining professional stakeholder relationships

Experience in managing and leading a team (Executive Level roles only)

Cyber Threat Intelligence Analyst/Intrusion Analyst

Cyber Threat Intelligence Analysts/Intrusion Analysts are responsible for understanding, detecting and analysing malicious cyber activity targeting Australia. Analysts use a variety of unique data sources to undertake analysis of malicious cyber activity and produce intelligence which inform the highest levels of the Australian Government. This analysis and reporting also enables a variety of response operations to mitigate malicious cyber activity.

Duties include:

Translate and analyse materials in languages other than English
Combine analytical thinking and problem solving skills with an understanding of technical concepts
Conduct cyber event analysis, technical research and strategic threat assessments
Produce intelligence reporting focused on threat actors and their tactics, techniques and procedures
Plan and conduct cyber operations

Learning and Development

The Learning and Development Function is responsible for performing the analysis, design, development, conduct and evaluation of Languages Other Than English (LOTE) learning and development activities through the provision and maintenance of external LOTE services.

Staff are required to have knowledge of and compliance with relevant legislative frameworks, government decision-making and Australian Signals Directorate’s mission and policy requirements.
