The Co-Lab
The Co-Lab is a collaboration between the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) and the Australian National University (ANU). This partnership provides a collaborative research environment within the ANU.
ASD and ANU staff and students at the Co-Lab conduct complex research into Australia’s toughest national security problems. Co-Lab also helps us develop the nation’s future science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) workforce.
Building STEM capability
ASD and ANU are two large employers of people with STEM qualifications in Canberra. The Co-Lab will foster the development of STEM skills and provide a focal point for activities supporting the growth of Australian STEM capability.
To achieve its mission, ASD requires people with a mix of specialist skills, adaptability, imagination, resilience and creativity. These abilities are needed to out-think and out-imagine some of the most testing adversaries and problems imaginable. If you want to work with other smart, skilled people, consider a career at ASD.
Professional learning and development
ASD and ANU will help develop Australia’s next generation of scientists and mathematicians. We will create unique training courses that equip staff and students to thrive in contemporary work environments that apply leading-edge science and technology.
Research
ANU staff and students collaborate with ASD specialists on complex research projects to work on some of Australia's toughest challenges. Co-Lab will focus on new solutions to problems, with a particular focus on data science, cryptography, secure communications, computing, cyber security and vulnerability research. The collaboration will increase the research capacity of both institutions. For more information on how you can be involved, visit the ANU Co-Lab website.
Diversity at Co-Lab
ASD desires and requires diversity. Improving pathways for under-represented groups in STEM is critical, and the Co-Lab runs specific targeted programs to achieve this. As an example, Co-Lab ran a series of workshops for high school girls interested in STEM as part of the Curious Minds coaching program.
